The club

A club, a basilica, a lot of rope

GS Redan is one of the largest caving clubs in Belgium, based in Brussels. Our training hall hides in the basement of the Koekelberg Basilica — yes, the big one with the green dome. During the week it’s a place of worship. On Tuesday nights, it’s our own personal cave.

What we stand for

Technique first

Knots, SRT, rigging: we take technique seriously so the underground stays fun — and safe.

Open to the motivated

Students, climbers, outdoor sports people or just the curious: if ropes and darkness appeal to you, you’ll feel at home.

Sharing the underground

Youth lessons, public openings, camps: what we learn under the Basilica, we pass on.

Young cavers

Youth program

Groupe Spéléo du Redan offers caving lessons with an emphasis on SRT for youth every Wednesday afternoon during the school year. Young participants who have mastered the basic techniques are invited to join the club’s camps during the Autumn and Spring holidays (according to the French-speaking school calendar).

The emphasis is on SRT (Single Rope Technique): moving up and down a single rope, just like in real caves. Youngsters who master the basics then join us at camp.

2 × a year

Camps

Two camps a year, during the French-speaking autumn and spring holidays: real caves, real mud and a schedule only cavers understand.

Youngsters who master the basic techniques join in — the reward after all those Wednesday trainings.

Ready to join us?

No experience needed to start: we’ll teach you everything, from your first knot to your first descent. Contact us and come try a session — Wednesdays for the youth, a Tuesday for your first evening with us. On odd Mondays, training is self-led.

Frequently asked questions

No — beginners are welcome. Tuesday training exists exactly for that: learning knots, technique and caution, in the hall under the Basilica.

Contact us through the form and come over on a Tuesday evening: you’ll discover the hall and the basics with us. On odd Mondays, training is self-led — everyone progresses on their own, we don’t provide assistance.

Single Rope Technique: moving along a single rope with ascenders and a descender — the foundation of vertical caving. It’s the core of our trainings, especially for the youth.

Yes! The Rally is for experienced cavers, but spectators are very welcome. Honestly: 2,000 metres of rope on a basilica is worth the trip.
